Cassie Deeg’s final-round performance at the 43rd Minnesota Women’s State Amateur Championship ended the same way it started: atop the leaderboard.
The Golden Eagle Golf Club member and St. Paul native finished the day with an even-par 72, her best round over the 54-hole tournament. She shot a 3-over-par 219 for the three-round event at Forest Hills Golf Club in Forest Lake.
“To win here at my old home course with all of my family and friends, and people I grew up playing around was a lot of fun,” Deeg said in a news release.
The member of the Nebraska Cornhuskers golf team shot a 1-over-par 73 and a 2-over-par 74 in the first and second round, respectively. She was only one of five golfers to post a cumulative score of better than 10 over par for the tournament.
Gophers golfer Anna Laorr was the runner up at 8-over-par 224 after matching Deeg’s final-round 72 while the trio of Hailey Boner, Sarah Burnham and Celia Kuenster tied for third at 9 over par.
Deeg, a former standout at Stillwater High School, was the 2011 Class 4A individual state champion while helping her team to second-place finishes in state in 2011 and 2012.
Swarm gets O’Connor, first round pick
The Minnesota Swarm on Wednesday acquired Ethan O’Connor and a first-round pick in the 2017 National Lacross League Entry Draft from the Toronto Rock for transition player Brock Sorenson.
O’Connor, 22, led the Rock with 133 loose balls last season, most among rookies.
Saints come up short
Outfielder Evan Bigley notched his 68th RBI of the season, 12 shy of the single-season franchise record, as the Saints lost to the Gary Southshore Railcats 4-1.
