Donald Constable and Clayton Rask moved on through sectional qualifying.
Playing more than 2,800 miles apart, former Gophers golfers Donald Constable and Clayton Rask survived “Golf’s Longest Day” together. The reward is a substantial one: A spot in this month’s U.S. Open.
The two were among more than 750 golfers who advanced out of local qualifying two weeks ago to Monday’s section stage held at 10 courses around the country.
Constable, of Excelsior, shot rounds of 72 and 69 at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md, for a 3-under-par 141. A few hours later, Rask, of Otsego, finished his 36 hole grind with the same total at Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell, Ore.
The scores were good enough for entries into the June 12-15 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, N.C.
It will be the major championship debut for both Constable and Rask. Rask has played on PGA Tour Canada circuit since 2008 and played on the Web.com tour full time in 2011. Constable has also played on the lower-tier tours and earned his PGA Tour card for 2013 but did not make a cut in 16 events.
However, Constable has some good history at Pinehurst. He won the 2010 North & South match-play amateur championship there as the 31st seed of 64 players.
