In his day, Arnold Palmer was the most successful and popular player on the PGA Tour. He hasn't won an official event since 1988, but that doesn't stop fans from flocking to see the four-time Masters winner.
Arnie can still draw an Army.
He once again is at TPC Twin Cities for the tournament within the 3M Championship, the annual Greats of Golf Challenge featuring nine of golf's best-known names.
It is the only event Palmer will play this season, and he's back because of his friendship with 3M tournament director Hollis Cavner.
There's the friendship -- and the persistence that comes with wanting to bring a name like Palmer to the area, that is.
"In addition to being my friend, he's a pain ..." Palmer said on the driving range Friday, flashing a big smile and speaking loud enough for Cavner to hear.
A short time later, Palmer teed off with Miller Barber and Don January in front of what was easily the largest gallery of the day.
Standing midway up the grassy hill on No. 1 was Mary, a lifelong Northeast Minneapolis resident who first saw Palmer not long after he played in the 1950 U.S. Amateur Championship at Minneapolis Golf Club.
She was all for talking about Palmer, just not about her last name or exact age to an inquiring reporter.
"When he started coming back here, I started coming back here," she said. "This is my one big event of the year. It's a thrill. He's very nice and very enjoyable. So gracious."
Palmer, who is aware of her pilgrimage to walk the course with his group, appreciates the support.
"Mary is wonderful," he said.
Stormy weather put a halt to Saturday's Greats of Golf challenge while players were still on the front nine. But they are scheduled to play again today -- again, in front of big galleries.
"You never get too old for that," said Palmer, 78. "You might get too old to play, but never too old for the fans or for the game."
Good for another dayBecause spectators were told to leave the grounds Saturday during the weather delay, all Saturday general admission tickets will be honored today. Any Saturday Corporate Hospitality tickets will be honored today as general admission tickets.
Chip Shots• Loren Roberts' 7-under-par 65 Saturday gave him nine consecutive rounds under 70 on the Champions Tour, the best streak this season.
