A career in the majors

Hilary Lunke was a LPGA Tour rookie in 2002 and won her only tournament, the 2003 U.S. Open, the next year. Her tour earnings spiked that year and have been heading down ever since. Here's a look at her earnings, by year, and with a comment in how she finished each of that year's four majors (she has appeared in three 2008 tourneys, including the year's first major, but failed to make the cut or earn a check so far):

• Top-70 finishes in both Kraft Nabisco and U.S. Open; missed cut in LPGA Championship and British Open.

2003 16 $654,660

• Won the Open and tied for 37th in the LPGA; missed cut in British and did not play in the Kraft Nabisco.

2002 133 $30,509

• Didn't play in the first three majors and missed the cut in the British.

Note: Lunke played in majors before 2002; her best finish was 56th in the 2000 U.S. Women's Open.
