Drewitt's 63 helps win local U.S. Amateur qualifier

Brett Drewitt from Inverell, Australia, shot a second-round, 8-under-par 63 for a 36-hole total of 137 to lead all qualifiers in sectional qualifying for the 112th U.S. Amateur Championship, held Monday at Victory Links Golf Club in Blaine.
Also qualifying were Hudson Carpenter of Stillwater and Charlie Danielson of Osceola, Wis. Both players recorded 2-under-par 140 totals over the 7,092-yard, par-71 course.
Tyler Lowenstein of Plymouth and David Haley Jr. of Hilliard, Ohio, both golfers for the Gophers, shot 141 to tie for the alternate positions. Lowenstein won the playoff for first alternate on the second playoff hole.
The U.S. Amateur Championship will be held at Cherry Hills Country Club in Denver on Aug. 13-19.
Etc.• The St. Paul Saints jumped on host Sioux Falls for five runs in the first inning and cruised to a 14-2 victory. Jon Townsend went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
