DAY 1 ROUND RECAP

Leaders: Jay Haas and John Huston,8-under 64

Here we go again. Jay Haas and John Huston took the first-round lead with a pair of 8-under-par 64s at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, setting the stage for another weekend of red numbers. Haas started meekly with three pars but got things going in a hurry when he notched his first Champions Tour hole in one on the 184-yard par-3 fourth with a 5-iron. He rolled in three straight birdies from there and fought off a pair of bogeys on the back nine with a four-birdie finish. Huston went on some runs of his own, including three birdies in a row to open his back nine en route to a closing 31. There are 15 players within three shots of the lead. Fifty-three of the 80 players in the field finished under par on a fantastic day for going low.HOLE OF THE DAY

No. 4 • 184 yards • par 3

OK, so players pretty much played No. 4 at level par for the day (3.050 to be exact), but the fourth is getting a reputation. After Fred Funk aced it in the final round of last year's 3M Championship, Jay Haas kept the putter in the bag there Friday. "That certainly kick-started my round," he said.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"I would have won the skipping competition." -- Peter Senior, lamenting his poor shot in front of the No. 18 pond. He botched it, landing the ball about 20 feet in front of him and watching it whisk across the water.

FOUR QUESTIONS: Up and down with Chip Beck

He got into the 3M Championship as the first alternate when Mark Wiebe withdrew early in the week. Beck responded with a 5-under-par 67 on Friday.

Q It has to feel good to do this after not knowing if you'd play or not this week.

A Real good, real good. I'm always happy to be in the tournaments right now, and I finished with a birdie -- almost made eagle -- so it could be a lot worse, couldn't it?

Q I notice you're on Twitter (@ChipBeck59).

A Yeah, how about that? My wife has been organizing that and things on Facebook. She's real good with computers and real good about communicating with me on things.

Q And the handle makes sense, given your 59 in 1991.

A That's fun. And it's amazing how much technology can help you. It jogs a lot of my sponsors' memories. "Oh, let's get Chip back. He'll play."

Q The 59 or your three runner-up finishes in majors, what sticks out more?

A The 59, in the respect that it helped two scholarships. It's been one of the nicest experiences of my life. It was more than just a golf score that brought me some fame and glory -- so to speak.
