Hakstol announces 2013-14 recruiting class at UND: eight in all, with size

The names have been out there for months.
But on Friday, North Dakota men’s hockey coach Dave Hakstol announced the names of eight incoming freshmen for the 2013-14 season.
Four are defensemen, three are forwards and one is a goalie.
Three are from North Dakota, including two cousins from Grand Forks where the school is, and one from next door in East Grand Forks, Minn. The other four players are from Canada, two from British Columbia, one from Alberta and one from Saskatchewan.
All are at least 5-11, and one is 6-4. So there is some size.
Two were teammates on the Penticton Vees in the BCHL, two were teammates on the U.S. national development team.
Hakstol said he might add a few more later.

Forwards
Luke Johnson, 5-11, 165, Grand Forks, N.D.
Draft eligible in 2013 and is ranked 96th among North American skaters by Central Scouting ... Spent the past two seasons with the Lincoln Stars of the USHL, where he was a teammate of fellow incoming freshman and Grand Forks native Paul LaDue, a cousin. Had 46 points (19g, 27a) and a team-leading nine power-play goals in 57 games in 2012-13. Had 55 points (20g, 35a) in 55 games in 2011-12 … Participated in the USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in each of his two years with Lincoln … Helped lead Team USA to a gold medal at the 2012 World Junior A Challenge, collecting four assists in four games.
Played at Grand Forks (N.D.) Central High School as a freshman (2009-10) and sophomore (2010-11), winning a state title and earning all-state honors as a sophomore.

Finished the 2012-13 season with the BCHL’s Surrey Eagles, collecting 14 goals and 12 assists in just 16 games … Had begun the year with Vernon and amassed 22 goals and 17 assists in 36 games … His 36 total goals tied him for third in the BCHL … Helped lead Surrey to a BCHL championship and is currently competing in the Royal Bank Cup national Junior A championship … Has 10 goals and eight assists in 17 playoff games … Earned BCHL Coastal Conference Second All-Star Team honors.

Named Humboldt’s Team MVP, Hardest Worker, Best Team Player, Most Dedicated Player, and Three-Star Award winner … Helped Humboldt to an SJHL championship in 2011-12 after leading the league in GAA (2.28) and shutouts (four) … Last name is pronounced huh-RINK-you.
Underage drinking issue pops up again at UND

The suspensions came after a team party where there was underage drinking.
UND is dealing with a similar issue again.
“We had the incident last fall; that jolted everybody,” UND coach DaveHakstol said, according to a story in the Grand Forks Herald. “It resulted in our team making some good adjustments. We did the right things through the entire season. But the incidents and the decisions that have come since the end of the season just don’t meet the standards.”
Freshman goalie Zane Gothberg, 20, received a citation for underage drinking March 31 after the team's return from the West Regional.
Two other players -- Colten St. Clair, 20, and Ben Chyzyk, 20 -- received citations for the same behavior last week and sophomore forward Stephane Pattyn, 22, received a noise citation.
"This is going to cost some people significant scholarship dollars," Hakstol said in the same Herald story.
Gothberg and Chyzyk were cited for underage drinking last September, too.
St. Clair and Chyzyk will be a sophomore forwards next season.
Knight named UND's MVP; Kristo wins two awards

He was a Hobey Baker Memorial Award finalist and a second-team All-America. He had 16 goals and 33 assists for 49 points.
Knight led the nation with 623 faceoff wins, 120 more than any other player and second-most in UND single-season history. He had a 19-game point streak that was UND’s longest in 25 years.

North Dakota (22-13-7, 14-7-7 WCHA) qualified for the NCAA postseason tournament for the 11th consecutive season, the longest active streak in Division I men’s hockey. UND won its first game, but lost to eventual-NCAA champion Yale in West Regional final.
VEES AWARDS
Defenseman Troy Stecher, a future UND player, was named the MVP of the Penticton Vees who play in the British Columbia Hockey League. He is 5-11, 180 and was the team captain.
He also receieved the Courage Award and the Best Defenseman Award.
Vees forward Louie Nanne, a Gophers recruit, was named the Most Improved Player and the Humanitarian Award winner. He had 25 goals and 28 assists for 53 points in 60 games. He was sixth in team scoring in the regular season wirth 41 points and tied for second in the postseason with 12 points in 15 games.
UND's Kristo gets a big award
Posted by: Roman Augustoviz Updated: April 3, 2013 - 9:05 AMNorth Dakota senior forward Danny Kristo, of Eden Prairie, has been named the 2012-13 College Hockey News' Player of the Year.
Kristo, obviously, also was named to the All-CHN first team, while Corban Knight, his center, was named to the All-CHN second team.
He had career highs this season in points (52), goals (26) and plus/minus (+17), while tying his career high in assists (26).
He is tied for second in the nation in both points and goals going into the Frozen Four and is tied for third with six game-winning goals.
He is the first player at UND to record 20-plus assists in each of his four seasons since Jeff Panzer did it from 1997-98 to 2000-01. Kristo reached the scoresheet in 31 game this season, tied for second-most in the nation, and led the team in plus/minus.
Many will also remember Kristo for the frostbite incident as a sophomore. He suffered severe frostbite on one foot and one hand on Jan. 30 when he ventured outside on a cold night, and somehow lost his tennis shoe. Doctors at first feared they might have to amputate his toes. He wound up at Regions Hospital in St. Paul and even came back to play at the end of that seaosn.
He's made quite a comeback from that stumble.
Kristo and Knight are both among the 10 Hobey Baker Award finalists.The Hobey Hat Trick -- the three final names -- will be announced today. One or both could make it, or they could take votes away from one another. It's hard to guess how it will turn out.
Knight had personal highs in points (49) and assists (33), while matching his career high with 16 goals.
He is from High River, Alberta, native, and led the nation with 623 faceoff wins, 120 more than any other player and the second-most in UND single-season history.
Knight put together a 19-game point streak that was UND’s longest in 25 years, and his 32 games with at least one point were more than any other player in the country.
During their four years at UND, Kristo and Knight helped lead UND to four NCAA postseason appearances, three Broadmoor Trophies as WCHA playoff champion, the 2010-11 MacNaughton Cup as WCHA regular season champion and one NCAA Frozen Four appearance.

NCAA preview: The West Regional with the Gophers

But the only WCHA teams favored to advance to a regional final are the Gophers and North Dakota, both in the West Regional in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Intangibles: Hot goalies can carry a team in the playoffs and Niagara has one of the top netminders in the country. Only two goalies were named among the 10 candidates for the Hobey Baker Award last week and Chubak was one.

The assistant captain was the top vote getter in the Vote for Hobey fan ballot and at one point this season, had a 19-game point streak, the longest North Dakota streak in 25 years. He currently ranks second in the nation in assists with 33 and was named to the all-WCHA second team. Knight is dynamite on face-offs averaging over 58% the past three seasons.

With linemate Corban Knight setting him up, Kristo is the finisher with 24 goals to rank third in the nation in goal scoring, giving North Dakota a powerful one-two punch. An assistant captain, Kristo was named to the all-WCHA first team, finishing second in the conference in goals and points. Kristo leads all active Division I college players in career points with 159.

Carsen Chubak – Niagara University, Junior, Goalie, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan
After playing nine games as a freshman and just one last year due to injury, Chubak has rebounded with a fantastic year. He led the Atlantic Hockey Association in virtually all goalie statistics and was named to all-conference first team and player of the year. He has played in 33 of the Purple Eagles 36 games and leads the nation with six shutouts, including a run of three straight.
· Currently 23-6-5 overall with a 1.81 goals against average, for fifth in the nation
· His .941 save percentage is fourth in the nation – AHA Goalie of the Week seven times
· Is a Sport Management major – helps a local youth hockey team several days a month
