Preps Insider brings you news, opinions and discussion that you can't find in print. Online, there's room to stretch, trade stories, ask questions - and get the inside stories in real time. We're passionate about our beat. We're opinionated. And we want to hear from you.
This place gets better and better every time you see it. I've been fortunate enough to catch a handful of Twins home games this season at Target Field. About 10 minutes ago, I experienced the press box for the first time and I gotta say, this place is top-notch.
It's championship baseball day here at the ballpark, billed by the MSHSL as the "Prep Championship Series"
Players from Eden Valley-Watkins and Sebeka have taken their spots in their respective dugouts (EV-W will be the home team for the Class 1A championship) and in about 15 minutes the gates will open for fans to take their spots in the green seats here. Some dark clouds are forming far beyond the Budweiser Adult Beverage that Cannot be Consumed Here Party Deck, but all signs point toward this being an all-systems go production event today.
My job today is to be a roaming reporter; I'll be on the field, in the stands and all places in between. We'll have the games covered - on the blog and in tomorrow's paper. And some other fun stuff as well.
For 10 bucks, you can see all three championships (scheduled starts at noon, 3 and 6 p.m.) So if you can swing it, make like the Price if Right and c'mon down.
First pitch in 70 minutes!
The Minnesota State High School Baseball Coaches Association has announced the names of the coaches selected for induction into the 2010 Minnesota State High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
Congratulations to the inductees!

12:45 update
The meeting is winding down as committee reports are being heard. This is boilerplate stuff. The gavel should drop in a matter of minutes.
The "news" from this meeting was encapsulated in the 12:01 update, seen below.
That's a wrap
12:01 update
The MSHSL board has moved throuugh some issues and corresponding votes pretty quickly. Here's a summary:
-- Uniform adornments. Athletes will be allowed to wear things such as wristbands, shoelaces, socks, helmet decals, etc., in support of causes such as breast cancer awareness.
--If H1N1 or a similar outbreak occurs, as much flexibility in scheduling as possible will be used in ensuring games take place. If competitors in individual events are unable to compete due to illness, or if teams cannot put together enough players to compete, events will be forfeited.
11:23 update
MSHSL associate director Jody Redman has given the board an update on the "Anyone Can Save a Life" program. It's a program devoted to educating school staff and students on life-saving skills needed in the case of sudden cardiac arrest.
Redman has given presentations about the program all over the state and in several national settings. The MSHSL, in partnership with the Medtronic Foundation, will begin offering information about the program to similar state associations around the nation.
The meeting is continuing ...
10:23 update
Still no big headlines out of this meeting. But there is this interesting tidbit ...
MSHSL staff members are giving brief reviews of the fall state tournaments. The most interesting comment came from associate director Kevin Merkle, who is in charge of the state football playoffs. He didn’t name which schools were involved, but it was clear he was talking about the Class 4A quarterfinal game between Sartell and St. Thomas Academy at the Metrodome when he said, “We would have had to admit we made a mistake.”
Original post
Good morning from MSHSL headquarters in Brooklyn Center. The MSHSL board of directors' December meeting will begin in a few minutes.
In perusing the information packet that is at each board member's seat, it looks like the following will be discussed:
--A policy for dealing with uniform adornments, such as during Breast Cancer Awareness month in October.
--Contingency plans in case an H1N1 outbreak affects subsection, section and state tournaments.
I'll post any pertinent updates. This should be a quiet meeting.

Bethlehem Academy and Minneota quickly swept three games today, with BA beating Gibbon-Fairfax-Wintyhrop and Minneota defeating Parkers Prairie.
Meadow Creek Christian lost the first two games before rallying to beat Nevis. Very nice effort by the Saints. As senior Kelli Strandlund told me,“We believe in each other, I think that’s the biggest thing. We keep playing together and don’t get down on each other.”
In the final 1A match today, Lake of the Woods leads Deer River 2-0. That one might be wrapping up quickly. Once it does, the 2A quarterfinals will take over.

The Hopkins softball team has received a big-time national academic honor. The Royals tied for first place in the nation in grade-point rankings for 2008-09, compiled by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
With a team GPA of 3.812, Hopkins tied for first place with Georgia's Madison County High School in the non-weighted category.
Minnesota Valley Lutheran of New Ulm placed third with a GPA of 3.777.
This is the third time in the past four years that Hopkins has claimed the top spot in the nation for GPA ranking. Not only have the Royals succeeded in the classroom, they have been Classic Lake champions, Class 3A Regions 6 AAA champions and state tournament participants in the last two years.
