Hats off to Johnson. But Grand Rapids has much to be proud of as well. No team stayed this close to the Governors straight through to the end. Roosevelt Scott applied the finishing touch, hitting both free throws with 9.9 seconds remaining to give Johnson a crucial 4-point lead.
Some great moments from both teams' star guards in this game. Johnson's Estan Tyler, a Star Tribune first team all-metro selection, converted a three-point play then hit a three-pointers on the Governors' next possession. He has 16 points.
Grand Rapids' Michael Johnson has just five points, but he made a great coast-to-coast drive and layup late in the first half. Whether Grand Rapids can keep up in the second half remains to be seen, but it's been an entertaining 18 minutes so far.
Crosby-Ironton just could not complete the rally, coming back from a 14-point deficit and cutting the gap to just two points, but New London-Spicer closed things out at the free throw line, making six of six down the stretch.
Jayme Moten's hair has met it's own worst enemy -- Jayme Moten. The New London-Spicer junior guard, who's trademark is his wild mane of dark, curly hair, has made four three-pointers in the first half and leads the Wildcats with 14 points. Moten made the promise that if NLS win the boys' basketball championship, he'll cut his hair. Get the shears ready.
The Wolves solved the Sebeka press inthe second half and pulled away using a spread offense to win the first title of any sort in school history.
