Minnesota cross-country teams dominate the region

From ESPN Rise:

What is it about Minnesota?

Why have its harriers been more successful at the NXN Heartland Regionals than any other state? Nine of the 16 team qualifiers to the NXN Finals in Portland, over the past four years, have been from Minnesota – with the boys getting six of the last eight. Last year, it was the Eden Prairie MN and Wayzata MN boys finishing 1-2. Sunday, at Yankton Trails Park in Sioux Falls, S.D., HL#1 Wayzata claimed the championship with 113 points, followed by Edina MN (124). Eden Prairie will be on the outside looking in, its 4th-place finish (149 pts.) a 6th-man tiebreaker behind Shawnee Mission Northwest KS (also 149).

Wayzata’s boys are now four for four making it to Portland since the Heartland Regional began in 2007. Meanwhile, the HL#2 Eden Prairie girls made it three Minnesota teams qualifying overall by hanging 57 points on the field. Those they conquered include HL#1 Dowling Catholic (Des Moines, Iowa; 73 points), which while failing to defend their 2009 crown were still very pleased to return to the Finals. Yankton Trails Park must feel a lot like home to this quartet of squads that will represent the region in three weeks.

Read the rest right here, and congrats to all the Minnesota teams (boys and girls) for their fine work over the weekend.

The Eden Prairie boys' cross-country team is No. 19 and Wayzata is No. 20 in a national ranking released by DyeState and ESPN.

In the national poll released recently, they are the only Minnesota teams to be included. Eden Prairie and Wayzata will meet in the Class 2A, Section 6 championships on Oct. 28.

Old-school cross-country meet

Here's an argument that cross-country runners are as tough as nail. Wayzata boys' cross-country Bill Miles filed this report via email a few minutes ago.

The weather caused the cancellation of the Chaska Invite and the postponement of the Classic Lake Conference Meet today. On the spur of the moment the Edina, Stillwater & Wayzata boys teams came together for an old school Cross Country Meet (circa 1968).

We ran 2 miles on our school grounds with results tallied with 3x5 cards and carbon paper used to get immediate results to the coaches. We had no computer chips, competitor numbers or modern technology (other than ballpoint pens) around and we still managed to get it done. A lot of the kids, parents & coaches thought it was a fun deal.

The Victoria Lions cross-country meet, one of the most prestigious competitions of the cross-country season, has been washed out by today's weather and rescheduled for Oct. 13.

According to coach Scott Stallman of host school Chaska, "We have proposed to the coaches that if they can come on the 13th we would still host a meet.  I’m fully aware that many conference meets are scheduled for that date but we will take anyone from our line of schools that can compete."

Let's hope for better weather in the days ahead.
