Following Gophers football year-round, Big Ten action and more

Watch another huge hit by Gophers' Tai'yon Devers

Tai’yon Devers made another huge hit Saturday, forcing yet another fumble, and electrifying the crowd at TCF Bank Stadium, as the Gophers jumped to a 17-7 lead over Colorado State by halftime.

Devers, a true freshman defensive end, drilled Rams quarterback Collin Hill late in the second quarter, knocking Hill’s helmet off as the ball bounced loose. Gaelin Elmore recovered the fumble for Minnesota, who turned it into a field goal.

Devers has now forced three fumbles on sacks this season. He did it twice in the season opener against Oregon State.

The Gophers were in position to break the game open after Devers’ fumble. They led 14-7 got a first down at Colorado State’s 2-yard line. To that point on the season, Minnesota had 11 touchdowns in 11 trips to the red zone.

But the Rams stopped Rodney Smith on two runs, and Mitch Leidner once, forcing a field goal.

Leidner threw his first interception of the season with 53 seconds left in the half, giving Colorado State a good chance to trim the lead. The Rams took over in Minnesota territory and lined up a 46-yard field goal attempt, but shanked the kick.

Leidner was 8-for-11 for 87 yards, with seven carries for 41 yards and a touchdown. Shannon Brooks made his 2016 debut, rushing four carries for 17 yards. Rodney Smith led all rushers with 12 carries for 83 yards and a touchdown.

Vincent Calhoun injured, leaving a hole at right guard for Gophers

Gophers right guard Vincent Calhoun has an unspecified injury and won't play Saturday against Colorado State. Sophomore Jared Weyler will take his place.

Calhoun was banged up two weeks ago in the Gophers win over Indiana State. Asked about Calhoun on Wednesday, coach Tracy Claeys said he thought Calhoun would be ready to play today. Weyler is one of the team's best backup linemen.

Crowded backfield

With the Gophers getting ready for another 11 a.m., kickoff (on ESPNU), it'll be interesting to see how offensive coordinator Jay Johnson doles out the rushing attempts between Rodney Smith, Kobe McCrary and Shannon Brooks.

After missing the first two games with a broken bone in his right foot, Brooks has been cleared to play. The Gophers would like to give him at least a few carries, so he's ready for next week's Big Ten opener at Penn State.

(By the way, Brooks has changed his number to 23.)

How will Johnson pick between three high-caliber running backs?

"I think it's challenging at times," he said. "I think it is sometimes a feel thing. Sometimes at that position, it's hard to mange it, but I think some guys get hot. I really do. They get in that flow, and it might not be that first or second or third carry, but all of the sudden that four, five and six, they've kind of got in that rhythm. So that's the hard part for me to balance."

The Gophers are wearing their maroon helmets, gold jerseys and maroon pants.
