Gophers add three-star wide receiver recruit

The Gophers added another wide receiver to their 2018 recruiting class Saturday, when Detroit native Erik Gibson gave them a verbal commitment.

The 6-2, 195-pound Gibson, from Detroit's Martin Luther King High School, is a consensus three-star recruit who also had reported offers from Ball State, Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan.

The Gophers now have 12 players committed for the Class of 2018 and sit at No. 10 nationally in the 247Sports composite rankings. Gibson announced his decision on Twitter:

Western Michigan linebacker Robert Spillane decides not to transfer

Robert Spillane, the Western Michigan linebacker whose transfer plans in February led to accusations that Gophers coach P.J. Fleck was recruiting his former players, has decided not to transfer after all.

Spillane announced Wednesday that he is staying put at Western Michigan. The junior linebacker was one of the Broncos top players last season, when the team went 13-1 under Fleck.

The Gophers did self-report a minor NCAA violation, acknowledging contact between Fleck and a former player. Athletics Director Mark Coyle told the Pioneer Press: "From my understanding, even if a coach sends a former student-athlete a text that even says ‘happy birthday,’ that’s a violation."

But the Gophers were firm from the beginning that Fleck wasn't recruiting any of his former players.

After announcing his plans to transfer, Spillane tweeted “contrary to media reports” his decision to get his release from the school “has nothing to do with P.J. Fleck or the University of Minnesota.”

Once Spillane decided to stay in Kalamazoo, Mich., he tweeted: "I have realized that WMU has been my home for 3 years and is the place I want to call home in 20 years."
