Following Gophers football year-round, Big Ten action and more

Elijah Teague, a highly coveted recruit from Chicago, commits to Gophers

The Gophers have big holes to fill at defensive tackle in their next recruiting class, and Saturday night, they landed one potential solution.

Elijah Teague, a highly coveted junior from Chicago Marist High School, verbally committed to Minnesota after an unofficial visit to campus.

The 6-2, 287-pound Teague is a consensus three-star recruit who also had reported offers from Penn State, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Tennessee, among others.

The Gophers have three returning seniors at defensive tackle for this fall – Steven Richardson, Andrew Stelter and Merrick Jackson. Gary Moore is a redshirt junior, but heading into signing day earlier this month, they had no freshmen or sophomores at the position.

Coach P.J. Fleck signed three defensive tackles in the 2017 class and plans to add six more for next year. Teague announced his commitment on Twitter.

Jay Johnson confirms that he's been hired at Georgia

Former Gophers offensive coordinator Jay Johnson has been hired as an offensive analyst at Georgia, Johnson confirmed Friday night.

The news was first reported by Dawgs247.com.

A Lakeville native, Johnson returned to Minnesota last year and had a one-season stint as the Gophers offensive coordinator. After averaging 22.5 points per game in 2015, the Gophers increased that total to 29.3 under Johnson, who had previously worked at Louisiana-Lafayette and a host of other schools.

The Gophers finished 9-4 last season, but Athletics Director Mark Coyle fired Johnson, along with head coach Tracy Claeys and the rest of the coaching staff in January.

At Georgia, Johnson will be working under head coach Kirby Smart and offensive coordinator Jim Chaney.
