It's over in Class 2A boys' golf competition. Shortly before 7 p.m., MSHSL officials determined there was no way players were going to get back on the course in time to finish before the sun ran out. So despite most players through nine holes - albeit different ones - the record will forever show this as an 18-hole tournament. Depending on who you are, that's good news or bad.
Orono built itself a 12-shot lead after Day 1 with a blistering 292. So even though this wasn't a "full" tournament, they earned the team victory for sure. Coach Doug Erickson said his top four players were all 1-under-par or even after nine holes today, so even though we'll never know it appears the Spartans were on their way to victory anyway.
On the other hand, the individual title goes to Holy Angels senior Jake Erickson even though he was not exactly tearing it up today. He shot a 69 yesterday, but after nine holes today he had carded a 44.
"I was thanking my lucky stars that it ended," he said. "I was fighting the game a little. I've never been a good bad-weather player."
You gotta feel for kids like Nic Jensen of Rochester Lourdes. He was one off the pace after yesterday, and was even par through 11 holes when play was stopped.
Winds were an issue all day. Then at 4:45 the clouds started to thicken and darken and the writing was on the wall. It never really rained until much later, but it's clear this was the right call by the MSHSL. You can't take chances with 88 kids holding metal clubs.
Right now (it's about 7:25) it is absolutely pouring here, and lightning is in the area. I doubt this final round would have ever gotten in today.
By the way, just an update from several news reports: It appears the roof of Wadena High School is gone, and the ice arena there has been destroyed. Thankfully there's nothing like that down here.
