Simley vs. Apple Valley wrestling match canceled

Posted by: $author under Minnesota high school wrestling Updated: February 10, 2010 - 5:03 PM

Simley put out this notification a little while ago. Unfortunately, it means the cancellation of a highly anticipated wrestling dual between the Spartans and Apple Valley. Here's the release:

On Saturday, February 6, 2010, the Simley wrestling team was exposed to the herpes gladitorium virus at the Classic Suburban Conference Championship. Simley currently has no cases of the virus, but because of the exposure at the conference tournament any competition through February 14th could potentially put their opponents at risk to the virus. It has been highly recommended by Dr. B.J. Anderson and Craig Perry at the MSHSL that all the teams that competed at the Classic Suburban Conference meet should have a no contact for a period of eight days. The teams in the Classic Suburban Conference are eligible to workout during this period with no contact.

Simley and Apple Valley are scheduled to wrestle on Friday, February 12, 2010, at Apple Valley. If this match were to take place there would be potential risk of further exposure to the virus. After consulting Dr. B.J. Anderson and Craig Perry at the MSHSL it is the recommendation of the Simley and Apple Valley administration that this match does not take place. This decision is proactive and is in the best interest of the wrestlers of Simley and Apple Valley.

The evening of wrestling at Apple Valley was to honor and recognize those who have battled and continue to battle cancer. The evening was to be titled “Lottie Trom Cancer Awareness” night, in honor of Lottie Trom, mother of Apple Valley wrestler Dakota Trom. Lottie fought valiantly against breast cancer until her passing. On behalf of the Apple Valley and Simley Wrestling Communities, over $1500 was raised by both schools and will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation in their quest to stamp out cancer.

Section competition begins next week.
