Defenseman Jared Spurgeon got a four-year, $20.75 million contract extension from the Wild, the team announced today.
The deal starts in the 2016-17 season. It includes a limited no-trade clause (20-team no-trade list in 2017-18, 10-team no-trade lists in 2018-19 and 2019-20).
Spurgeon, 26, has been a top-four defenseman for the Wild during his six seasons. He has 30 goals and 87 points in 326 career NHL games and the fewest penalty minutes (38) among NHL defenseman who have played at least 300 games since 2010.
Signing Spurgeon starts to solve some of the salary cap puzzle facing GM Chuck Fletcher that was detailed in this story.
