Twins promote Byron Buxton to Class AA New Britain

Center fielder Byron Buxton had a home run and three RBI for Class A Fort Myers on Monday night and then was promoted to Class AA New Britain.

Twins media relations director Dustin Morse confirmed the move to the web site MiLB.com.

Writer Ashley Marshall reported: "Buxton, who turns 21 in December, will become the youngest position player on the team. Only right-handed pitcher Jose Berrios, who turned 20 in May, is younger. The Eastern League average is 24 years old."

Buxton was expected to start the 2014 season in New Britain, but sprained his wrist during spring training and has been limited to 30 games in Fort Myers, in which he hit .240, with four home runs and 33 strikeouts in 134 plate appearances.

Buxton was the second overall pick in the 2012 draft and has been ranked as the top prospect in the minor leagues.
