Michael Rand started RandBall with hopes that he could convince the world to love jumpsuits as much as he does. So far, he's only succeeded in using the word "redacted" a lot. He welcomes suggestions, news tips, links of pure genius, and pictures of pets in Halloween costumes here, though he already knows he will regret that last part.

Monday (Packers would be dangerous with an indoor home stadium) edition: Wha' happened?

Posted by: Michael Rand under Professional football, Vikings Updated: January 6, 2014 - 10:01 AM

Regular readers of this space might think we are trolling Packers fans right now, but believe us: we are dead serious in the assertion that Green Bay -- as currently constructed and for the next several years -- would be a much better and more dangerous team if it played in a building like the Metrodome instead of Lambeau Field.

Note: This is not to say that the Dome is nicer than Lambeau. Nobody would ever say that.

It's just to say that the Packers -- particularly Aaron Rodgers and his wide receivers -- would be better off in an indoor stadium and would be legit Super Bowl threats every season regardless of their defense (much like those Kurt Warner Rams teams were for a brief period).

Some quick numbers back us up:

*The Packers have now lost five of their last eight home playoff games. Three of those five losses at Daunte's House came with Brett Favre as Packers QB, but two were with Rodgers.

*The Packers have played four playoff games in favorable weather under Rodgers: at Arizona in 2009 (72 degrees at kickoff), at Atlanta in 2010 (Dome), the Super Bowl after the 2010 season (vs. Steelers in closed-roof Cowboys Stadium) and San Francisco last year (48 degrees at kickoff). They have scored at least 31 points in all of those games, averaged 39 points and won their only Super Bowl of the Rodgers Era.

*The Packers have played five playoff games in cold weather under Rodgers, with temperatures at kickoff below freezing in each game: at Philadelphia in 2010, at Chicago in 2010, home vs. Giants in 2011, home vs. Vikings in 2012 and home vs. San Francisco on Sunday. While they managed to win three of them -- two in 2010 when they actually had a defense and 2012 vs. Minnesota when Joe Webb was the quarterback -- they haven't topped 24 points in any of those five cold-weather playoff games under Rodgers.

Give Rodgers the comfort of a Dome -- at least a retractable one for late in the season, when temperatures turn frigid -- and he would be lights-out. As constructed now, the Packers are built more for the comforts of an indoor stadium than the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field.
