He learned ice hockey, however, long before — during the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah (his hometown). He got a close up look of legendary Gophers alum Herb Brooks and other Minnesota hockey greats. Jason has been with the Star Tribune since 2012.

There was a sense of relief after the Gophers women’s hockey 62-game winning streak came to an end with a 3-2 loss to North Dakota on Sunday afternoon.
The late-game pressure of extending college hockey’s record-breaking streak will no longer haunt or motivate the Gophers. Now they can just focus on being the 2013-2014 Gophers with a 13-1-0 record.
Here’s some extra quotes from the emotional afternoon of hockey and see below for postgame video. Full game story should be updated soon.
-We’re not sad it’s over, we’re happy cause we were a part of it. And I’ll tip my hat to anybody that can go to 62 or 63 games without a loss.
-Somebody asked me last week, ‘Do you have your speech planned for when you lose?’ I didn’t and I don’t. I just talk from the heart. We lost a hockey game, welcome to the globe (earth). Losses happen every once in a while. It’s not the end of the world. The sun will come up tomorrow and we’ll be better here on Tuesday.
-It’s frustrating being upset, but at the same time it’s an amazing to be part of it. As bad as this sounds, it’s a relief. We’re really, really honored to be a part of the 62-game streak.
-I knew it was going to happen at some point and that was OK. Now that’s out of the way it’s a slight relief in a way because it’s not the primary focus anymore.
-Now we kind of know where it sits and there’s not the pressure of continuing on.
-It’s just something in the back of your mind as much as you do want to ignore it. It is mentally exhausting. Now we can focus on this year, not things of the past. Thirteen-and-1, that’s a pretty good darn record, either way.
