Gophers men's hockey schedule full of national TV exposure

Posted by: Jason Gonzalez Updated: September 16, 2013 - 5:20 PM

The Gophers men’s hockey team will get plenty of exposure this season. The Big Ten Network announced a 2013-2014 hockey schedule Monday afternoon that will feature nine regular-season appearances by the Gophers.

Among the broadcasts, as expected, is the Hockey City Classic Minnesota. The Gophers' outdoor game at TCF Bank Stadium against Ohio State will be aired Jan. 17 at 8 p.m.

BTN also said it will offer unprecedented men’s hockey coverage that will included eight consecutive weeks of “Frozen Friday” doubleheaders in January and February. The conference, overall, will have at least 70 games televised, 34 on national TV. The Gophers are slated for 12 of the 34 national spotlights.

A Big Ten Hockey Preview Show will air on Oct. 11 prior to the season opener featuring Penn State and Army. “Frozen Fridays” also will include pregame, intermission and postgame analysis.

The Gophers' first four games will air on Fox Sports North. Big Ten Network will make its first appearance at Mariucci Oct. 25 for the Boston College game. The second half of the season will be flooded with BTN coverage. Eight of the nine broadcasts are lined up after winter break.

According the Gophers athletic website, ESPNU will air the Gophers' Big Ten opener against Wisconsin on Nov. 29. The site also has ESPNews pegged for two of the Gophers’ final three games – one at Ohio State, the other at Michigan.

Longtime Gophers TV partner Fox Sports North is slated for 19 games. Fox Sports North Plus will pick up seven of those. Only five games are without a TV presence. Television rights for the nonconference series at Notre Dame belong to Hockey East and broadcast details have not been finalized.

BTN also will air the entire Big Ten Tournament, March 20-22 at Xcel Energy Center.
