As the summer drifts by, the Gophers continue to make inroads.

Proof of that once more is Colorado-native point guard Josh Perkins, who, according to Adam Zagoria of ZagsBlog.com, has narrowed his list to five, including Minnesota. The other four, Zagoria writes, are UCLA, Gonzaga, UConn and Kentucky.

The 6-2, 175-pound Perkins is one of a handful of 2014 point guards the Gophers are looking at, including Ja'Quan Newton, Alex Robinson, Kaleb Joseph, Lourawls Nairn Jr. and of course, everyone's favorite local, Tyus Jones -- but Perkins is the highest ranked of all non-Tyus recruits on Rivals, landing at No. 28 nationwide.

Adding intrigue to the interest in Minnesota is rumors that Perkins and Golden Valley-native Rashad Vaughn have plotted to play together at their eventual destination. Perkin's father, Randy, however, told Zagoria that the assertion is "kid's talk" and he doesn't think the package deal is realistic. Vaughn has said he's waiting until next spring to announce his choice.

It looks like the Gophers won't have to wait long to find out if they made the next cut -- to one -- because Perkins has said he will announce on his birthday, August 25.
