Lynx win in Indiana

With Seimone Augustus still resting her sprained left ankle, the Lynx beat Indiana 69-62 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse Thursday afternoon.

The victory, the team’s third straight, improved the Lynx’s record to 10-3 overall, and evened their road record  at 3-3. It was Minnesota’s  sixth straight victory at Indiana and the Lynx have won eight of their last 11 regular-season games vs. the Fever, the team that beat them in the WNBA finals a year ago.

Here are some notes and quotes from the game:

--Monica Wright followed up her 22-point night against Atlanta with another 22 today. Wright had 10 of those points on 5-of-7 shooting, with five rebounds, in the first quarter. She finished with those 22 points, a career-high nine rebounds and four assists. In two starts she is averaging 22 points, 5.3 assists and 4.7 rebounds.

--Lindsay Whalen added 23 points with five rebounds and two assists. Whalen closed out the game, scoring 12 of Minnesota’s 17 fourth-quarter points.

--Rebekkah Brunson picked up her 1,000th rebound in a Lynx uniform today. She needs 26 more to overtake Tamika Raymond and become the franchise leader in that department.

--It was another strong defensive effort; the Lynx held Indiana to 34.4 percent shooting. During the Lynx’s current three-game winning streak, all of their opponents have shot under 40 percent. And, just like the Lynx did with Diana Taurasi on Sunday and Angel McCoughtry Tuesday, they held Indiana’s best player down. Tamika Catchings scored nine points on 2-for-10 shooting.

--Today’s win was the 10th in franchise history in which the Lynx did not hit a three-pointer, the first since July 1, 2010.

Here are some quotes, as supplied by the Fever media relations department:

Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve: “We knew this … would be a hard game. Indiana has won three in a row, (Tamika) Catchings scoring in double figures.  Our defense and effort were outstanding.  We held Catchings in scoring tonight.  Monica (Wright) plays aggressive whether starting or coming off the bench.  I like that.  She’s like our sixth starter.’’

Monica Wright: “Great win for us. Every time we play Indy, it’s a grind. They are a very disciplined team. Our defense made a difference for us.”

Whalen: “I thought it was a tough game. We needed that win. It was a hard-fought game.”

Fever coach Lin Dunn: “That’s a really good team right there and they’re playing really well right now. They’ve got an awful lot of bullets on offense. I thought we did well to hold them. We just needed to get to 70.”

Dunn on Whalen: “She’s so strong and she hit some big shots when the game was on the line. I think she’s gotten even better. She’s leaner. I think she’s gotten quicker.”
