Each week, commenter RandBallsStu (branding!) tracks down a former Minnesota sports figure about whom you might have forgotten. This usually works out well. Stu? ---------

The Hunt Down

Name: Gustave Frerotte Nickname: "Gus," of course, but I would have totally stuck with "Gustave," which sounds more menacing and capable of threading a deep-out between the defender and the sideline, where only a field-stretching one can go up and get it. Claim to Fame, Minnesota: the most popular Minnesota Viking in 2003 and 2004, when he was Daunte Culpepper's backup, and 2008, when he was Tarvaris Jackson's backup. (Here is the high point of his tenure.) Claim to Fame, Everywhere Else: I assume he'd prefer being known for being a Pro Bowl quarterback (with Washington in 1997) and leading multiple NFL teams during a 15–year professional career. I assume he's come to peace with being known as the dude who headbutted a wall, sprained his neck and was forced to leave the game and go to the hospital. Where He Is Now: The head coach for your John Burroughs Bombers, the 2012 runner-up in the Missouri State High School Activities Association's Class 3 division. Is He On Twitter: "No people results for gus frerotte" Has He Been in a Twitter Feud with Patrick Reusse: no. Glorious Randomness: the Wikipedia entry for John Burroughs claims that the school is among the nation's best at standardized testing. Given that one of its alums is Todd Akin, we will assume they are not including the science portion. (Other notable Bombers: the delightful Jon Hamm, the delightful-er Ellie Kemper.)
