Lynx finish practice with up-tempo scrimmage

As training camp has progressed, Minnesota Lynx practices have become more intense. More proof of that came Tuesday, when practice was ended with an extended scrimmage featuring the starters against the reserves.

It was up-tempo and hotly contested…Oh, and it was won, 40-35, by the reserves, who were led by Monica Wright.

“I was a little surprised the youth was able to challenge the vets the way they did today,” coach Cheryl Reeve said. “(Wright) was a big part of that.”

Competition appears intense for the final few roster spots.  Jacki Gemelos is back, full-time, after missing time with a quad injury. Reeve complimented the way first-round draft pick Lindsey Moore has played so far, particularly in today’s scrimmage. “I’m seeing a really steady guard who organizes really well. And that’s such a big thing, that you know what you’re running, getting good play calls.’’

Reeve also said Rachel Jarry scrimmaged well Tuesday.

Other notes:

--Rookie free agent Pepper Wilson has done some good things in the post. “She is a challenging player to handle physically, as long as she’s finishing around the basket,” Reeve said.

--Center Janel McCarville, fresh off her stint throwing out the first pitch at Monday’s Twins game -- “It was heat, it was a fastball,” she joked – is feeling better and better. After missing some time during the first week-plus with a variety of bumps and bruises and some lingering back discomfort, McCarville took full part Tuesday, running with the first team during the scrimmage.

“I’m starting to get into the swing of things,” she said. “I still have some conditioning I need to jump on. But it feels good. I finally ran with the first team.”

--Rookie guard Sugar Rodgers (quad) again missed practice.

That’s about all for now. Have a good day.
