Michael Rand started RandBall with hopes that he could convince the world to love jumpsuits as much as he does. So far, he's only succeeded in using the word "redacted" a lot. He welcomes suggestions, news tips, links of pure genius, and pictures of pets in Halloween costumes here, though he already knows he will regret that last part.

Stu's Hunt Down: Former Vikings VP Fran Foley

Posted by: Michael Rand under Vikings Updated: May 10, 2013 - 11:50 AM

Each week, commenter RandBallsStu (branding!) tracks down a former Minnesota sports figure about whom you might have forgotten. This generally works out well, unless we get yelled at. Stu?

------

The Hunt Down

Name: Fran Foley

Claim to Fame, Minnesota: The personnel director for your Minnesota Vikings for three glorious months in 2006. His main accomplishment as one-third of the Triangle of Authority was that year’s draft, which saw the Purple select Chad Greenway, Ray Edwards and Cedric Griffin, but also trade up for Ryan Cook and Tarvaris Jackson. Much like fellow former Vikings employee George O’Leary, Foley had a résumé that used, um, enhanced versions of the truth. Those exaggerations, plus what local Weird Al enthusiast Kevin Seifert termed a “brash management style,” likely contributed to his early dismissal.

Thing I Didn’t Recall: in the aforementioned piece, Seifert notes that Foley’s position was created by Vikings owner Zygi Wilf at the urging of former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue.

Claim to Fame, Everywhere Else: It is not an exaggeration to say that he was a longtime front office guy for both the San Diego Chargers and Jacksonville Jaguars before the Vikings hired him.

Where He Is Now: He is the director of football operations for your Big-Ten bound University of Maryland Terrapins.

Is He on Twitter: no.

Has He Ever Been in a Twitter Feud with Patrick Reusse: no.

Glorious Randomness: Foley is an alum of Framingham State University, which also claims teacher/astronaut Christa McAuliffe and Ruth Graves Wakefield, inventor of the chocolate chip cookie, as graduates.

Cookie Power Rankings: 1. Chocolate Chip; 2. Peanut Butter; 3. Snickerdoodle; Dead Last, Forever and Ever: Oatmeal Raisin, BECAUSE THEY’RE NOT HONEST ABOUT WHO THEY ARE.
