Royce White: Many in the NBA want me gone

Posted by: Howard Sinker Updated: March 19, 2013 - 11:35 AM

Royce White was featured Tuesday morning on Huffington Post's "HuffPost Live" to discuss mental illness and pro sports. White, the former Hopkins High star who played for one season at Iowa State after not being allowed to play at the University of Minnesota, said that he thinks NBA commissioner David Stern and others in the league would like to see him gone from the NBA.

White was drafted by the Houston Rockets that summer and, after a dispute over the treatment he needed to combat his anxiety disorder, he agreed to report to Houston's Rio Grande Valley team in the NBA's Developmental League.

White told HuffPost Live: "If I was to make an educated guess, I would guess that Adam Silver and David Stern and the Rockets organization, some other owners in the league, GMs, want me gone. And why do they want me gone? Because business is about convenience, not about doing what's necessary. It's about cutting overhead... And a lot of times, what's best for us as human beings doesn't meet that criteria for business people."

A couple of weeks back,  columnist Jim Souhan visited with White in Texas. His story, from the March 3 Star Tribune, is here.
