Michael Rand started RandBall with hopes that he could convince the world to love jumpsuits as much as he does. So far, he's only succeeded in using the word "redacted" a lot. He welcomes suggestions, news tips, links of pure genius, and pictures of pets in Halloween costumes here, though he already knows he will regret that last part.

Stu's Hunt Down: Former prep basketball standout Skipp Schaefbauer

Posted by: Michael Rand under Minnesota state tournaments Updated: February 14, 2013 - 2:54 PM

Each week, Comm

enter RandBallsStu (branding!) tracks down a former Minnesota sports figure about whom you might have otherwise forgotten. This usual involves a smidgen of Internet research during his lunch break and occasionally ends with an angry phone call from the huntee where we stammer a lot and apologize (Jeff Brady edition). Stu?

-----------

The Hunt Down

Name: Skipp Schaefbauer

Claim to Fame, Minnesota: 1993’s Mr. Basketball for the state of Minnesota and the Strib’s Metro Player of the Year. Schaefbauer hails from Elk River, which didn’t even have a Sonic back then.

Claim to Fame, Everywhere Else: Schaefbauer attended East Carolina before transferring to Illinois State, where the Sherburne County Sharpshooter (a nickname I have just made up and is so terrible that I hope Michael edits it out, oh too late) shot over 40% from beyond the arc in his junior season. His senior season ended with a broken leg during the conference tournament, forcing him to miss Illinois State’s first-round overtime victory over Tennessee in the 1998 NCAA tournament.

Where He Is Now: Apparently still in Normal, Illinois, the home of Illinois State, where as of 2009 he was a fire fighting triathlete. He does not appear to have live-tweeted the event. Here’s a picture of Skip (sic) playing tennis in 2012. Here’s a picture of Normal Mayor Chris Koos with former U.S. Rep. Debbie Halvorson.

Is He on Twitter: maybe?

Has He Ever Been in a Twitter Feud with Patrick Reusse: no. But Uncle Pat did uncover Skipp’s political leanings in 1997.

Glorious Randomness: Normal, Illinois is the birthplace of legendary Midwest burger chain Steak ‘n Shake, and was founded by the perfectly named Gus Belt.
