Jerry Zgoda missed the entire Kevin Garnett era, but he's back covering the Timberwolves after working the beat for their first four seasons two decades ago. In between, he covered a bit of everything: Gopher men's and women's basketball and NCAA athletics, golf, outdoor recreation, sports media and a little Vikings and Twins.

Wolves waive Hayward before Monday deadline

The Wolves today waived Lazar Hayward, a day before contract become guaranteed for the season and teams can start signing free agents to 10-day contracts.

The move is not at all unexpected.

The Wolves could re-sign him to a 10-day contract on Monday or go after a player waived today by another team or sign European swingman Mickael Gelabale, who has an NBA out in his contract through Jan. 30

Hayward signed as a free agent on Dec. 31 and played a total of 12 minutes in two games.

They signed him then because they need a swingman who could both back up Andrei Kirilenko at small forward and play some at shooting guard too because the Wolves now are down to just three healthy guards as long as Ricky Rubio is sidelined by that bad back.
