Tech goalie named rookie of week for his play against Gophers

Freshman goalie Pheonix Copley of Michigan Tech is the WCHA's rookie of the week.

The 6-3, 175-pound Copley, of  North Pole, Alaska, stopped 28 of 31 shots  Friday as the Huskies upset the No. 1-rated Gophers 5-3.  Copley had  31 saves in Tech's  3-2 loss  Saturday and held Minnesota scoreless on all five power-play chances.

OTHER AWARDS

Colorado College senior forward Andrew Hamburg is the offensive player of the week. Hamburg, of Phoenix, Ariz., scored four goals as the visiting Tigers won 6-2 on Friday over host Air Force.

Gophers sophomore Seth Ambroz and Michigan Tech forward Chad Pietila were among six other players nominated for this award. Ambroz scored two goals, including the game-winner, for the U on Saturday.

Sophomore goalie Andrew Walsh, who stopped 63 of 64 shots for Bemidji State in a split with Lake Superior State is the defensive player of the week. The Beavers lost the first game of the series 2-0, then won the second 5-0.

Walsh stopped a career-high 38 shots on Friday and  25 shots Saturday in his third career shutout.

Defenseman Brad Stebner of Michigan Tech was among the other nominees.
