Lynx guard Augustus among top MVP candidates

Posted by: Roman Augustoviz under Lynx Updated: June 22, 2012 - 5:49 PM

Lynx guard Seimone Augustus moved up two spots in wnba.com's weekly Race to the MVP feature. She is sixth this week after three season-highs against New York on Thursday. She had 26 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.

Oh, she also was four for four on three-point shots. Augustus is shooting 51.4 percent from the floor and 48.3 percent on threes. Those stats, if the season ended now, would be career highs.

The Lynx beat the Liberty 102-70 to improve to 11-1.

The top three in the MVP race are L.A.'s Candace Parker, Chicago's Sylvia Fowles and Connecticut's Tina Charles. ... Lynx forward Maya Moore is No. 9.

* Here's an oddity: Chicago is listed first in the Eastern Conference standings, but is actually one-half game behind Connecticut. The Sky at 7-2 have a better winning percentage than the Sun (9-3) who have played three more games.

* Lynx assistant coach Shelley Patterson will on KARE's Saturday Show, which starts at 8 a.m., talking about Title IX. Tomorrow is the 40-year anniversary of it becoming law. Patterson's segment is expected to air about 8:20 a.m.

* Cynthia Cooper, who led the Houston Comets to the first four WNBA titles from 1997-2000, will be honored during Saturday's game at Target Center as one of the pioneers of the WNBA. She was the league's MVP in 1997 and '98 and the WNBA Finals MVP all four years her team won the league title.

Cooper will be on the Lynx radio broadcast of the Chicago game during the second quarter. Then she will  join ESPN for its national broadcast of the game during the third quarter.

HELP DULUTH

The Lynx will ask fans at Saturday's game to support flood victims in the city of Duluth.

Said Lynx Chief Operating Officer Conrad Smith, “We’ve all seen the damage that the flooding has caused and our thoughts are with Duluth residents during the recovery process.”

Fans can donate to the Red Cross by:

* visiting www.redcrossmn.org

* calling 800-733-2767

* texting “REDCROSS” to 90999 to make a $10 donation

* ,sending checks to the Northland Chapter of the American Red Cross at 2524 Maple Grove Road, Duluth, MN 55811.

SKED-WATCHING

The Lynx set a WNBA record by winning their first 10 games of the season and they are still in uncharted waters at 11-1. Their record could and, barring injuries, should get more gaudy.

The rest of the Lynx schedule before their five-week break for the London Olympics:

Saturday: Chicago, 11:30 am ... Sky lead the East based on winning percentage; Chicago is 7-2, coming off a loss Saturday to Indiana ... Sky is 3-0 vs. West teams ... Will miss leading scorer Epiphanny Prince (fractured right foot). She is out for 6-8 weeks ... Win

Wednesday: Phoenix, 7 pm ... Most injured team in league. List of hurt includes Diana Taurasi, Penny Taylor and Candice Dupree -- team's top three scorers -- and Nakia Sanford. ... Win

Aug. 1: at San Antonio, 2 pm ... Silver Stars are struggling to get above .500. ... Win

Aug. 5:  at Los Angeles, 2 pm ... Candace Parker is playing like an MVP. ... Loss

Aug. 7: Connecticut, 7 pm ... Lynx already have win on Sun's home court. ... Win

Aug. 10: At Tulsa, 11:30 am ... Shock are pesky, but Tulsa still is in last place in West. ... Win

Aug. 12: Tulsa, noon ... Can't get overconfident. ... Win

So my prediction is Lynx, off to an 11-1 start, will go 6-1 in the next three weeks and be 17-2 at the break. Agree? Disagree?

They might even win in L.A., but expect them to stumble someplace. Maybe against Chicago or Connecticut.
