Is Mike Broskowski a Cory Provus-in-training?

Summer baseball isn't only a training ground for the people who play the game. In Rochester this summer, 23-year-old Mike Broskowski will be doing play-by-play for the Rochester Honkers of the Northwoods League -- and hoping to turn this modest start into something bigger.

He told the Rochester Post-Bulletin: "I remember a minor league baseball magazine as a kid and they featured the day in the life of a minor league broadcaster and I was hooked. I decided that was what I wanted to do.''

Broskowski is a student at Western Illinois University and already has some experience as part of the broadcasting crew for the Class A Cedar Rapids Kernels of the Midwest League. This is his first solo job in baseball.

"Growing up I would listen to games on the internet,'' he told the Post-Bulletin's Paul Christian, "and at times I would also score the game in my scorebook. I picked up a lot of things from various broadcasters. To this day, I listen to random games and when possible take notes. Maybe that's a nerdy thing to do, but I find that it helps out a ton.''

If you want to get out your notebook, you can listen to Broskowski on Rochester's KOLM. There's a link to the webcasts near the bottom of  this page.
