“It is a really big win for us," said Seimone Augustus of the Lynx after her team beat the Sun 85-72 on Friday night in Uncasville. Conn. "Connecticut is a tough place to play. The fans here are amazing. They get behind their team and it becomes very hard to play here.
"The intensity that their team plays with is like none other," Augustus said, according to a Sun's news release. "We expect that of a playoff team, and this year they are going to be fighting for a playoff spot and possibly playing in the Finals. For our motivation and for our confidence moving forward, this was a very good win.”
Augustus scored 23 points to lead the Lynx in scoring for the fourth time in six games.
The Lynx had 20 turnovers that led to 26 Sun points, so not everything went well for the visitors.
“That was ugly," Augustus said. "Connecticut is the No. 1 defensive team in the league, so you expect to have some turnovers, but it was uncharacteristic of us to have 20 turnovers. The fact that they have so many scorers and our turnovers led to them scoring 26 points, if we cut that in half, this could have been a much bigger win for us.
"When we get back to Minnesota, we will go back to the drawing board, watch some film, and see where we can clean some things up.”
The Lynx (6-0) returned to Minnesota on Saturday and play San Antonio at 6 p.m. Sunday at Target Center.
Maya Moore, the second-year, all-star forward had only three points and sat most of the fourth quarter, but guard Monica Wright came in and scored 13 points as a reserve.
“We expect Maya to be an awesome player for us and she will be," Augustus said, "but she will have nights like this, everyone will, but it is the second squad of players that makes a difference. Monnie definitely came up big with Maya struggling tonight. It was great to see her step up and fill those shoes.”
