This is Amelia Rayno's second season on the Gophers' basketball beat. She learned college basketball in North Carolina (Go Tar Heels!), where fanhood is not an option. In 2010, she joined the Star Tribune after graduating from Boston's Emerson College, which sadly had no exciting D-I college hoops to latch onto. Amelia has also worked on the sports desk at the Boston Globe and interned at the Detroit News.

In light of the recently released Big Ten/ACC Challenge matchups, I thought I’d take a look back at who the Gophers have faced in the past, and how they’ve done.

  • Overall, the Gophers are 5-8 in the 13-year-old challenge. Minnesota won three of the first four challenge matchups, but then lost five in a row and have won just two of the past nine (one of those, of course, was last season, against Virginia Tech).
  • The Gophers have played UVA the most times, splitting their four meetings.
  • This season, Minnesota will play Florida State for the fourth time as well. The Gophers won the first matchup, at FSU, but have dropped the last two.
  • The Gophers have played Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Clemson and Miami each once. They have never played North Carolina, Duke, NC State or Boston College.

Here’s the full, 13-year recap:

1999 – vs. Virginia; WIN, 74-62
2000 -- @ FSU; WIN, 79-71
2001 -- @ Wake Forest; LOSS, 85-79
2002 – vs. Georgia Tech; WIN, 64-63
2003 -- @ Virginia; LOSS, 86-78
2004 –vs. FSU; LOSS, 70-69
2005 -- @ Maryland; LOSS, 83-66
2006 – vs. Clemson; LOSS, 90-68
2007 -- @ FSU; LOSS, 75-61
2008 – vs. Virginia; WIN, 66-56
2009 -- @ Miami; LOSS, 63-58
2010 – vs. Virginia; LOSS, 87-79
2011 – vs. Virginia Tech; WIN, 58-55
