Jerry Zgoda missed the entire Kevin Garnett era, but he's back covering the Timberwolves after working the beat for their first four seasons two decades ago. In between, he covered a bit of everything: Gopher men's and women's basketball and NCAA athletics, golf, outdoor recreation, sports media and a little Vikings and Twins.

Barea hamstring: "Not torn," doubtful for Friday vs. Heat

J.J. Barea ran a little bit today, but did not practice because of that hamstring he injured Tuesday in Milwaukee and is uncertain whether he'll be able to play Friday night against mighty Miami at Target Center.

Tests showed the hamstring is just strained, not torn.

"It's not bad, it's a lot better today," Barea said. "No tearing. It's just swollen and bruised up and we'll see how it feels tomorrow and we'll go from there. It's still pulling me every time I try to run a little bit, but it's going to get much better tomorrow and we'll see how it goes."

Will he play against that Heat team that he beat with Dallas in the NBA Finals last summer?

"I don't know, I don't know yet," he said. "I don't want to say no or say yet. But we'll see. We'll definitely on Sunday, though."

Sunday? Why Sunday?

Oh yeah, a little team called the Mavericks come to town.

"Just another game, just another game," he said smiling. "It will be weird, but it will be fun."

Barea injured that hamstring going for a layup in Tuesday's loss at Milwaukee.

"I never had one before," he said. "I'm kind of mad these last couple days. I'm never hurt in the last five years. If I miss one game a season that's a lot. I'm trying to get through this week and get healthy again. I'm going to be cautious, this early in the season. I've never dealt with a hamstring before in my life, I don't know how it goes."

Center Nikola Pekovic practiced some today but is not expected to be ready to play Friday because of a strained right groin he injured in the preseason finale against Milwaukee.

Rookie guard Malcolm Lee remains out with an unspecified knee injury. Rick Adelman said doctors will examine him again.

Lee had surgery to repair a torn MCL after last season at UCLA. Not sure if this is related to that.

I also stopped down at Heat practice late this afternoon and talked with LeBron and Chris Bosh.

I'll toss up here on the blog later tonight some of the stuff they had to say about playing against Rubio in the Olympics and other thoughts on him and KLove as well.

One strange sight down there at the Wolves' basement practice court:

I saw this guy, his hair wildly disheveled, churning furiously on an exercise machine as Heat players lingered on the court a couple feet away and couldn't figure who with the Heat this might be.

Then I realized it was David Kahn.

My intial thought seeing him out of place like that with Heat players and coaches everywhere:

Maybe he had been traded...
