Gophers: Going little up front

Justin Kloos, a 5-7 junior center for Lakeville South, has committed to the Gophers.

Kloos had 41 goals and 49 assists for 90 points this season. Nice numbers. Gophers coach Don Lucia said he was bringing in some smaller forwards who could be expected to stay four years.

Kloos would seem to fit that description unless he has a big growth spurt.

* Lucia and his son Mario, a 6-2 junior forward for Wayzata, were at Frozen Four practices on Wednesday at the Xcel. "We were watching some teams and it's good to connect there," Don Lucia said.

Don is a Notre Dame graduate, too. "I'll cheer for Notre Dame," he said. "It's only natural. And I have a little preference for the teams in the first game [the Irish and UMD]. Neither has won a title."

Michigan, which plays North Dakota in the second game, has won nine NCAA titles, the most of any school. The Sioux have won seven.

THE DON SAYS

* Has Mario committed to a college? No.

* Any progress on his contract extension, which AD Joel Maturi has promised? We have had discussions.

* Will you sign anybody  when the spring signing period starts this month? [Recruiting] is an on-going  process. We will sign one for sure.
