Joe Christensen covered Major League Baseball for 15 years, including three seasons at the Baltimore Sun and eight at the Star Tribune, before switching to the college football beat. He’s a Faribault, Minn., native who graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1996. He covered Jim Wacker’s Gophers for the Minnesota Daily and also wrote about USC, UCLA and the Rose Bowl for the Riverside Press-Enterprise before getting this chance to cover football again.
Email Joe to talk about the Gophers.
Tim Brewster is a finalist for the head coaching job at Texas State, according to the San Antonio Express-News, and will interview this week.
Coincidentally, Jerry Kill's collegiate coach is up for the job, too, as well as a coach who preceded Kill at Southern Illinois, plus a top assistant to a coach who interviewed for the job that Kill got.
Yeah, the coaching world is full of connections.
Texas State, located less than an hour from both San Antonio and Austin in San Marcos, is planning to upgrade its football program to FBS status within two years. The Bobcats have already been invited to join the WAC.
Brewster, fired by the Gophers on Oct. 17 after a 1-6 start to the season and a 15-30 tenure in Minnesota, has ties to Texas, having spent four seasons on the Longhorns' staff.
Dennis Franchione, who coached Kill at Southwestern College and later gave the new Gophers coach his first collegiate job as an assistant at Pittsburg State in Kansas, will also interview for the job. The 59-year-old Franchione has headed programs at Southwest Texas State, TCU and Texas A&M, as well as New Mexico and Alabama.
Also up for the job, according to the Express-News: Nebraska offensive coordinator Shawn Watson, whose only head coaching experience came at Southern Illinois, where he went 11-22 from 1994-96 -- four years before the Salukis hired Kill.
And Rocky Long, who succeeded Franchione at New Mexico and spent the past three seasons as defensive coordinator at San Diego State -- where he works under Brady Hoke, who was considered for the Gophers' job last month -- interviewed on Thursday. The timing could be interesting for Long, who would be a strong candidate to take over the Aztecs if Hoke is lured away by Michigan, which reportedly fired Rich Rodriguez on Tuesday.
