Jerry Zgoda missed the entire Kevin Garnett era, but he's back covering the Timberwolves after working the beat for their first four seasons two decades ago. In between, he covered a bit of everything: Gopher men's and women's basketball and NCAA athletics, golf, outdoor recreation, sports media and a little Vikings and Twins.

Also, Wolves executive Jerry Sichting will join new Warriors coach Keith Smart as an assistant coach. The team's new owner reportedly is paying Don Nelson his $6 million salary for this season to retire or resign and go back to Maui so the Warriors can start anew.

Former assistant coach Dean Cooper, who was serving as a Wolves regional scout, has accepted a job as Portland player personnel director.

Both departures -- along with Fred Hoiberg's spring departure to Iowa State -- will allow David Kahn more opportunity to remake the front office as he deems. His first big move, of course, was hiring Tony Ronzone as assistant GM
