When Edina scored the last and most damaging of its four goals in the second period, the resulting 5-2 lead confirmed what Roseau boys' hockey coach Andy Lundbohm already knew: the No. 2-seeded Hornets' depth made the difference.
Seven different Edina players tallied a goal in a 7-3 dispatching of Roseau in Thursday's first Class 2A quarterfinal.
"I think we matched their top-end speed and skill but we tapered off faster than they did," Lundbohm said. "They kept coming at us."
With the score tied 1-1, Roseau (22-6-1) took its first lead on a goal from Adam Knochenmus at 2:47 of the second period. Edina knotted the score again at 4:56 on Blake Chapman's goal before pulling away with three more in the period.
Brett Stolpestad's goal held up as the game-winner, but Jake Sampson's one-timer with 21 seconds remaining in the second period changed the outlook of both teams.
"That one probably took the most wind out of our sails," Knochenmus said. "We tried to come back but today wasn't our day."
Said Chapman: "That gave us a lot of momentum going back into the locker room and going into the third period."
The Hornets (21-6-2) also showed their depth and skill on defense, limiting Roseau to 11 shots through the first two periods.
"If you keep allowing a skilled team like Roseau to gain ice on you, you're going to be back on your heels all night," Edina coach Curt Giles said. "We tried to shut down the ice as much as possible."
