Area roundup: Mavericks exit quickly from playoffs

Mark Petro kicked a 34-yard field goal in overtime to lift Hillsdale to a 27-24 victory over host Minnesota State Mankato on Saturday in the opening round of the NCAA Division II playoffs.

Mankato, which had scored with 38 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime, lost a fumble on the opening possession of the overtime.

Petro had kicked a 20-yard field goal with 12:38 remaining in regulation to give Hillsdale a 24-17 lead.

The Mavericks (10-2) got the ball back at their own 25 with 2:35 remaining. Ryan Fick's 22-yard touchdown pass to Omaar Balton capped a six-play, 75-yard drive.

Jake Aberg rushed for 168 yards and a touchdown for the Mavericks.

Hillsdale (10-2), making its first appearance in the Division II playoffs, will play Grand Valley State in the second round.

UMD will play Nebraska-Kearney

NSIC champion Minnesota Duluth had a bye in the first round the NCAA Division II playoffs. The Bulldogs will play Nebraska-Kearney in the field of 16 on Saturday in Duluth. Nebraska-Kearney (10-1) beat Saginaw Valley State in the first round 35-20.

Wis.-Whitewater 58, Wis.-La Crosse 21: The Warhawks sealed their fifth consecutive WIAC title with the victory in La Crosse, Wis. Jeff Donovan threw three touchdown passes, and Levell Coppage rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns.

Wis.-Eau Claire 49, Wis.-River Falls 35: Kyle Paulson passed for 345 yards and three touchdowns and Cory Sartorelli rushed for 163 yards and two TDs to lead the visiting Blugolds.

Wis.-Stevens Point 41, Wis.-Platteville 27: The visiting Pointers scored 28 consecutive points in the fourth quarter to rally for the victory.

Wis.-Stout 27, Wis.-Oshkosh 24: Patrick Mengelkoch caught three touchdown passes and Kendall Wade had two interceptions to lead the visiting Blue Devils.

Elsewhere

Lawrence 21, Minn.-Morris 17: Nick Maxam threw three touchdown passes to lead visiting Lawrence to a nonconference victory. The Cougars led 17-14 before Maxam threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Nate Nelson with 9:17 remaining.
