MIAC roundup: Johnnies end regular season on perfect note

St. John's wrapped up an undefeated regular season and the MIAC title outright with a 41-14 victory over Carleton in Collegeville, Minn., on Saturday.

The Johnnies (10-0, 8-0 MIAC) led the Knights (3-7, 1-7) by seven at halftime, then pulled away to earn their 14th conference title in the past 19 seasons.

Nate Johnson and Ethan Eid each returned interceptions for touchdowns, and freshman Stephen Johnson rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns for the Johnnies.

The pairings for the NCAA Division III playoffs will be announced today.

Bethel 44, Augsburg 6: Josh Aakre passed for three touchdowns and Logan Flannery rushed for 120 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead the host Royals past the Auggies.

Gustavus 20, Concordia (Moorhead) 19: Greg Lane's 86-yard kickoff return for a touchdown with 39 seconds remaining lifted the visiting Gusties to the victory. The Cobbers had taken a 19-13 lead with 54 seconds remaining on a 21-yard field goal by Carl Hauser.

St. Olaf 34, Hamline 20: Leon Clark rushed for 261 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Oles past the Pipers in Northfield. Clark's 94-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter gave the Oles a 24-20 lead. He finished with 1,084 rushing yards on the season -- the fourth-best total in school history.

St. Thomas 63, Northwestern (Roseville) 14: Fritz Waldvogel returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns to spark the host Tommies to a nonconference victory. Waldvogel returned a punt 50 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter and a kickoff 86 yards in the second quarter -- his sixth kick return touchdown of the season. Ben Wartman rushed for 158 yards and two touchdowns for the Tommies.
