Trailing 15-6 to open the fourth quarter, St. Thomas Academy got a momentum change when it needed one.
St. Thomas Academy started the fourth quarter trailing Mahtomedi 15-6, a small deficit that seemed larger in context.
"We're not used to being down," senior running back Danny Abbott said. "But this team has such heart. I told my guys in the huddle, 'Keep fighting, keep fighting -- we're going to get in the end zone.'"
Abbott scored on a 19-yard rush then intercepted a pass on Mahtomedi's ensuing possession. The Cadets scored a second fourth-quarter touchdown, one that gave them a 20-15 lead they would not relinquish. Friday's Class 4A state tournament quarterfinal victory moves St. Thomas Academy (11-0) to the semifinals, beginning at 12:45 p.m. on Friday at the Metrodome.
St. Thomas Academy and Mahtomedi reside in the Classic Suburban Conference but met for the first time this season in the misty rain at Woodbury High School.
Strong defense and spotty offensive execution resulted in several punts and just one first half score, a 9-yard touchdown pass from Cadets' quarterback John Garry to receiver Kyle Rhode.
Mahtomedi (10-2) found its footing in the third quarter. Derek Scherbel intercepted a tipped pass and the offense later cashed in on Dan Ferrazzo's touchdown pass to Alec Martinson.
Charlie Adams sparked the Zephyrs next drive, hauling in a 32-yard pass from Ferrazzo at the Cadets' 8-yard line. Ferrazzo threw for a second touchdown pass, this time to Haini MoiMoi and Mahtomedi took a 15-6 lead.
Then Abbott stole whatever momentum Mahtomedi had built. His touchdown run early in the fourth quarter provided a spark and his interception was electric.
"After that, the momentum turned and we knew we we're going to win this game," Abbott said.
I made this championship belt for the push to the '09 Division Title. Gladden offered to buy it; I wanted a trade for one of his rings. He declined.
