Sports fans, this weekend is it!

MNF: Packers vs. the Vikings: But this time Favre’s in purple!

One of the greatest weekends for sports in Minnesota is upon us. Still need a ticket? It'll cost you.

Last update: October 2, 2009 - 5:58 PM

The Gophers-Wisconsin football game at TCF Bank Stadium on Saturday is a sellout.

So is the Twins' final regular-season game ever in the Metrodome on Sunday ... and the Packers-Vikings game at the Dome on Monday night.

Should we mention more than 200,000 people are expected to line the streets Sunday morning to watch the Twin Cities Marathon? Or that the Wild's home opener Tuesday will certainly be their 288th consecutive regular-season sellout?

Question is, if you aren't already set, can you get tickets?

Be ready to pay more than you'd like for the few tickets available via websites or scalpers. Tickets for the Vikings game, which features quarterback Brett Favre playing his old team for the first time, were selling for as much as $1,001, and Gophers tickets were as high as $364 late Thursday afternoon.

The convergence of events is described as "phenomenal'' by Stephen Ross, an associate professor of sports management at the University of Minnesota. "This will be a huge weekend in the Twin Cities area when you are talking about these hallmark events," he said.

Three savvy sports minds (who happen to be scalpers) agree.

"It's the greatest sports weekend," Guy Logan said. "It's historic."

"Demand is going to be huge,'' said Len, who preferred not to provide his last name. "The Gophers and Badgers are always a rivalry, it's the last year in the Dome [for the Twins] and Brett Favre -- you don't need to say anymore about that."

A man nicknamed Iowa, wearing a yellow Waldorf College cap, was less enthusiastic about this weekend, only because the scalping business depends on being able to buy tickets and then resell them at a higher price.

"You are going to have to do a lot of work to find tickets [to sell]," he said. "It's going to be hard. The prices are high right now."

Still, tickets for this weekend's sold-out games are available on websites such as Craigslist and StubHub. As are parking and tailgating spots for the Gophers' game. For the right price.

A runner can even scalp a bib to compete in the Twin Cities Marathon, which capped entries at 11,580 -- if he or she is desperate to run 26 miles and 365 yards.

Presumably, more folks are looking to tailgate, paint their faces and sit in the stands. The college and pro border battles in football and the Twins' three-game series should draw about 250,000 fans, and a sizable number of them might be attired in the Badgers' red and white, or the Packers' green and gold.

With the high demand for tickets to those games, StubHub, which bills itself as the world's largest ticket marketplace, is setting local records. The San Francisco-based eBay company, which connects sellers and buyers, has already handled the sale of 8,500 tickets for the Vikings-Packers game.

As of 11 p.m. Thursday, about 900 were still available, most in the upper corners priced from $118 to $319. The game is the best-selling Vikings home game on StubHub in its 10-year history, and 16 percent of those buying tickets are from Wisconsin.

Some of those Cheeseheads are arriving early. Twenty-five percent of those buying Badgers-Gophers tickets on StubHub are from Wisconsin. There were only 87 left, ranging from $126 to $341, late Thursday.

Chad Huebner of Appleton is one of those Wisconsites going to the Monday night game. He recently sold his two tickets to the game on Craigslist because a buddy in Apple Valley had better seats.

"I'm a Packer fan like no other," said Huebner, who has a 1978 Ford Iola ambulance painted and decorated in Green Bay colors. The interior: artificial turf.

He calls it the Packulance, but is leaving it at home this weekend, fearing Vikings fans might abuse it.

"This is the biggest game of the year," Huebner said. "It's the whole Favre vs. [general manager] Ted Thompson debacle, it's professor vs. student, Brett Favre vs. Aaron Rodgers. It's the battle for the NFC North title."

And Huebner, the Packers season-ticket, holder, said he might be cheering for Favre at times.

"I love Brett Favre," said Huebner, 39.

Matt of Minneapolis is just as big a fan of the Gophers. His family has 10 season tickets, but he has sold four for the Badgers game for $275 apiece and has three more for sale for $325 and a tailgating spot.

"We're die-hard fans," Matt said. "My dad was bringing us to Gophers games since we were kids."

Matt said he has received 15 to 20 phone calls and e-mails a day since his listing a week ago. Most of the prospective buyers are from Wisconsin, Matt said, and some just want his tailgating spot.

Matt said his family hates selling the Wisconsin game tickets, but it's economics. The money from these tickets, he said, made it affordable for some of his family members to buy $775 season tickets this year. That's a huge jump from the $250 season tickets his family had in the Dome a year ago.

University students also are selling their student section tickets. That has raised concerns at the university, which on Thursday issued a public reminder that only will valid U of M student IDs will be admitted.

"There will always be a couple of people who look for the money," Gophers quarterback Adam Weber said, "but most fans realize how special this is and will come out in maroon and gold."
