James Isch was appointed NCAA interim president, less than a week after Myles Brand died of pancreatic cancer at age 67. Isch had been serving as the NCAA's vice president for administration and chief financial officer.
NCAA Executive Committee chairman Michael Adams said the decision was made Monday night. He gave no timetable for naming a full-time president.
Isch, 59, joined the NCAA's staff in 1998 after holding administrative posts at Arkansas, Kansas State and Montana State. He owns a bachelor's degree from Kansas State.
The Colorado Avalanche will be without defenseman Tom Preissing for four to six weeks following arthroscopic surgery on his right knee.
The Avalanche acquired Preissing, 30, and defenseman Kyle Quincey in an offseason deal that sent Ryan Smyth to the Kings.
Preissing, a former Colorado College standout from Rosemount, had three goals and four assists in 22 games for the Kings last season.
California wide receiver Nyan Boateng will miss about a month after undergoing surgery on his broken right foot. Boateng was injured Saturday at Minnesota.
Boateng had five catches for 78 yards and a touchdown as the third receiver for the sixth-ranked Golden Bears. "He was making plays this year," quarterback Kevin Riley said. "He runs crisp routes, make plays, catches the ball well. It definitely hurts."
Coach Jeff Tedford said Jeremy Ross and Alex Lagemann will move up the depth chart.
The Bears open Pac-10 play on Saturday at Oregon and then host No. 12 Southern California next week.
• James Montgomery, Washington State's leading rusher, will miss the rest of the season because of a left-leg injury suffered in Saturday's overtime victory over Southern Methodist. ... Surgery is scheduled for Monday for Illinois middle linebacker Martez Wilson, who will need three to seven months to recover from a herniated disk, coach Ron Zook said.
Former Gophers guard Lindsay Whalen and Lynx guard Candice Wiggins, as well as four former University of Connecticut players, were among 14 players added to the training camp roster by USA Basketball and coach Geno Auriemma.

Wrestling: Jake Herbert and Tervel Dlagnev won the first two medals for the United States at the world championships in Denmark. Herbert, an NCAA champion from Northwestern, won silver at 185 pounds after losing to Zaurbek Sokhiev of Uzbekistan in the final, 1-0, 1-0. Dlagnev beat Alex Modebadze of Georgia in the bronze-medal match at 264 1/2 pounds, 2-0, 2-0.
Horse racing: Former Preakness champion Summer Squall was euthanized in Versailles, Ky. He was 22. Summer Squall finished second in the 1990 Kentucky Derby behind Unbridled, then returned the favor in the Preakness.
Money matters: Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. agreed to pay $5.6 million in back taxes, money the Internal Revenue Service was poised to take from his $10 million purse after his Saturday fight against Juan Manuel Marquez. ... Champions Tour golfer Jim Thorpe pleaded guilty to failing to pay more than $2 million in income taxes from 2002-04.
Auto racing: Kyle Busch was docked 25 points and crew chief Steve Addington was fined $25,000 after Busch's Toyota failed post-race inspection at New Hampshire.
