Bass scores late, salvages a draw for Thunder

Thunder midfielder Jeremiah Bass scored in the 90th minute Saturday, helping the Thunder salvage a 1-1 tie with the Portland Timbers at the National Sports Center.

Tony McManus gave the Timbers a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 63rd minute.

Portland won 5-1 the last time the teams met.

The Thunder missed on two other chances in the final moments of the game. Ricardo Sanchez and Geoffrey Myers had shots that nearly tied the score in the 89th minute.

"We played very well in the first half," said Thunder defender/midfielder Melvin Tarley. "We came out very strong and we had the ball a lot with a lot of opportunities. The second half was a little weak but we came back in the end."

Saints lose to Explorers

The Sioux City Explorers scored two runs in the seventh to break a tie and went on to defeat the St. Paul Saints 4-1 in Sioux City, Iowa.

Kyle Johnson drove in the Saints' run.

The teams will conclude their series and the first half of the American Association schedule today.

Top jock rides stakes winner

Stolis Kool Trick, piloted by Canterbury Park's leading jockey, won the $51,650 Grade 3 Northlands Futurity on Saturday at the track.

Stolis Kool Trick broke sharply from the outside post, and jockey Ry Eikleberry guided the 2-year-old quarter horse filly to victory by a nose over A Sweet Gamble in a final time of 17.920 seconds for the 350 yards. Stolis Kool Trick is trained by Edward Ross Hardy for LMR Racing.

The $50,000 Northbound Pride Stakes, restricted to 3-year-old thoroughbred fillies, went to Sirrah, owned by Al and Bill Ulwelling of Elk River. Jockey Jose Ferrer was aboard Sirrah for trainer Mike Biehler. The final time for the 1-mile turf race was 1:38 1/5. Sirrah returned $14.
