Treyson Potts, a running back from Williamsport, Pa., announced via Twitter on Wednesday that he has committed to the Gophers.

The three-star prospect is the No. 13-ranked all-purpose back nationally in the Class of 2019 by the 247Sports.com composite ratings of major recruiting services. Potts missed his junior season because of a torn ACL but rushed for 2,017 yards and 37 TDs as a sophomore.

ESPY nominees out

Several Minnesota athletes have been nominated for ESPY Awards, presented by ESPN. Lynx center Sylvia Fowles is up for the "Best Female Athlete" and. along with teammate Maya Moore, for the "Best WNBA Player" award.

The Vikings have been nominated for the "Best Game" and "Best Play" on the heels of the Minneapolis Miracle against the Saints. Olympic cross-country skiing gold medalist Jessie Diggins will contend for the "Best Olympic Moment" and Mike Schultz of St. Cloud is nominated for the "Best Male Athlete with a Disability" after taking gold in snowboarding in the Paralympic Games.

The ESPYS will be held July 18 on ABC.

Vikings moves

The Vikings put defensive end Hercules Mata'afa, who tore his ACL during organized team activities, on the waived/injured list on Wednesday, and signed linebacker Mike Needham. If Mata'afa clears waivers, the Vikings can put him on injured reserve.

Rockies sign Vavra

Gophers shortstop Terrin Vavra, a first-team All-Big Ten selection, signed with Colorado. The Rockies selected the junior in the third round (96th overall) of the MLB amateur draft earlier this month.
