Gophers redshirt freshman Ashley Ramacher on Wednesday was named the women's Big Ten Freshman of the Year in outdoor track and field.

Ramacher, a high jumper from Eden Prairie, is the sixth Gopher to be so honored and the first since 2006.

Ramacher was second-team All-America and second-team All-Big Ten. She tied for 12th at the NCAA championships (5 feet, 8 inches) and was second at the Big Ten meet (5-11 ½).

• The Gophers women's swimming team announced the addition two transfers from the Pac-12: Katherine Wagner (freestyle) from Arizona State and Emily Cook (backstroke) from Washington State.

• The New York Mets purchased the contract of Saints second baseman Josh Allen and assigned him to Class AA Binghamton. Allen, 27, hit .344 in 24 games for the Saints.

• Winona State's Lani Van Zyl, the NSIC softball player of the year, was named a first-team All-America by Fastpitch News. Van Zyl, a Fort Dodge, Iowa, native, hit .473 with 13 home runs and 58 RBI.

• Justin Burleson defeated Trent Peterson 2 and 1 to win the Minnesota Golf Association Mid-Players' Championship at Crossing Country Club in Lakeville. It was a rematch of last year's final.
