St. Cloud State moved up from second to No. 1 in the uscho.com's Division I men's hockey poll, switching places with Denver. The Huskies had a tie and a win against North Dakota last weekend.

Notre Dame also moved up one spot to No. 3. The Irish have won 13 games in a row.

The Gophers, after getting swept at Ohio State, dropped three spots to No. 10 while the Buckeyes jumped from No. 15 to No. 9.

• In the women's hockey ranking, the Gophers stayed at No. 6 after a tie and a win over Minnesota Duluth. No. 1 Wisconsin and the other teams in the top eight all held their spots as well.

Big day for former U golfer

South African Erik Van Rooyen, a former Gophers golfer, finished second in the Joburg Open on Monday in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Van Rooyen closed with a 66 for a 20-under 267 total, three shots behind Shubhankar Sharma. The runner-up finish earned Van Rooyen 112,283 euros ($132,233 dollars) and a spot in the 2018 British Open.

• Minnesota State Mankato swept the WCHA men's hockey awards this week after beating Lake Superior State twice. Senior forward Zeb Knutson was named the offensive player of the week, junior defenseman Daniel Brickley the top defensive player, and center Jake Jaremko the rookie of the week.

• Junior running back and free safety Jason Williamson of Owatonna was named the Gatorade football player of the year. He rushed for 2,316 yards and 38 touchdowns in leading the Huskies to the Class 5A state title.
