South Bend, Ind. – Cale Morris stopped 44 shots as the fourth-ranked Notre Dame men's hockey team edged the No. 6 Gophers 1-0 on Friday night at the Compton Family Center in their first meeting ever as Big Ten opponents.

Andrew Oglevie scored the game's lone goal for the Irish (11-3-1, 5-0 Big Ten), at 1 minute, 43 seconds of the second period on a power play. It came after Mike Szmatula of Minnesota was called for tripping at 38 seconds.

"We did so many good things [tonight], I couldn't ask much more from our players the way they played and competed from start to finish," Gophers coach Don Lucia said. "We just couldn't get one by him [Morris].

"Eric made a couple good saves, too," Lucia said, referring to Eric Schierhorn, who stopped 22 saves for the Gophers. "I don't think we spent a lot of time in our own zone tonight. I thought our 'D' pushed the puck. I thought our forward played with good pace and had some good heavy shifts in the offensive zone.

"I look at our group as improving from where we were a month ago. We have grown a lot. It's just frustrating when you have a good game like that and you don't win. But that's hockey."

The Gophers (9-5-1, 3-3-1-1 Big Ten) outshot the Notre Dame 17-6 in the opening period. That's their second-highest shot total in a period this season — they had 18 shots in the opening period of a 2-0 victory over Union on Oct. 7.

Shots were 12 apiece in the middle period and 15-5 in the Gophers' favor in the third. Leon Bristed led Minnesota, shut out only once before this season, with seven shots on net.

The Irish were 1-for-3 on the power play, the visitors 0-4.

Notre Dame, a new addition to the Big Ten, ended the Gophers' season last spring, beating Minnesota 3-2 in the opening game of the Northeast Regional in Manchester, N.H.
