Jim Souhan of the Star Tribune as named one of the nation's top 10 large newspaper sports columnists, and reporter Jerry Zgoda earned a top-10 honor for his story from the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in judging at the annual Associated Press Sports Editors convention in Las Vegas this week. The Star Tribune sports section also received awards for its 2008 daily, Sunday and special sections.
Souhan's columns were judged among the top 10 for large, metro-sized newspapers with a daily circulation more than 250,000. Zgoda's award was in the game-story category.
Also in the large, metro paper division, the Star Tribune was named one of the top 10 Sunday sections, and its special section previewing the 2008 baseball season with a closer look at the American League Central Division also earned top-10 honors. The Star Tribune received honorable mention (top 20) for its daily (Monday-Saturday) section.

• Gophers freshman goaltender Alyssa Grogan was named the WCHA defensive player of the week. Grogan, a freshman from Eagan, got her third shutout of the season in the Gophers' 7-0 conference victory at St. Cloud State last Friday. Grogan had 18 saves and improved to 13-1-2.
• The Minnesota State Mankato women's basketball team is ranked first for the fifth consecutive week in the NCAA Division II Central Region Poll. MSU is 24-1, 17-1 in the NSIC. Winona State (20-5, 13-5) was third, Minnesota State-Moorhead (19-6, 12-6) fourth, Augustana 19-6, 13-5) sixth, St. Cloud State (19-6, 12-6) seventh and Minnesota-Duluth (14-11, 11-7) eighth.
