U's Mead, Wilson win cross-country awards

Gophers sophomore cross-country runner Hassan Mead and Gophers women's cross-country coach Gary Wilson were honored for successful seasons Wednesday by the Big Ten.

Mead, winner of the individual men's championship in the conference meet Saturday, was chosen as the conference's men's cross-country athlete of the year. Wilson, who led the U women's team to its second consecutive conference title, was chosen women's coach of the year for the second year in a row.

The Big Ten's women's cross-country athlete of the year was Michigan State senior Nicole Bush. Wisconsin's Mick Byrne was the men's coach of the year. Penn State's Kyle Dawson and Wisconsin's Caitlin Comfort were named freshmen of the year.

• Senior forward Gigi Marvin was named the WCHA Player of the Week for her performance against St. Cloud State last weekend. It is Marvin's first honor this year and her fifth offensive player of the week honor of her career. Marvin, from Warroad, Minn., scored three of Minnesota's eight goals over the weekend to lead the No. 2-ranked Gophers to a WCHA series sweep over St. Cloud State on Oct. 31-Nov. 1.

• The Gophers' Jillian Tyler was named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week. Tyler won all five of her events in a 217-151 dual meet victory against No. 16 North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. The sophomore earned NCAA consideration times in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, winning in 1:00.72 and 2:11.73, respectively. She also won the 200 individual medley in 2:01.69. All three individual races were meet records. She also swam a leg on the winning 200 (1:42.15) and 400 medley relay squads (3:43.16).

• University of Minnesota soccer player Kylie Kallman was named to the 2008 CoSida ESPN the Magazine Soccer Academic All-District team this week. Kallman was a second-team selection in CoSida's District 5. Kallman carries a 3.96 grade-point average in business.

• Nate Ziemski, a former two-time, Division III All-America goalie at Wisconsin-Superior, is the new goalies coach for the Gophers men's hockey team. He started Monday, replacing Robb Stauber, who resigned at the start of this season.
